Q. What do you love about teaching music?
“I love helping students overcome obstacles so they can improve on their instruments and realise their dreams! Music is like a never-ending game where every time you learn something new and different, you Level-UP! It never gets old, and there are always new scenarios to play - how cool is that? In teaching, you can help students overcome the obstacles and learning curves of a new instrument, so that they can get ahead on their musical journey - and seeing the joy of learning makes me love being a teacher!”
Oliver is a Toronto born, Toronto-based guitarist who has received his Bachelors with Honours in Music Performance from the prestigious Humber College. Despite being early on in his musical career, he has shared the stage with some of Toronto's finest, including Lorne Lofsky, Terry Clarke, and Artie Roth. In his studies he has had the privilege to study with some of the who's-who of the Toronto music scene, including teachers like Mark Eisenman, Kelly Jefferson, Nancy Walker, Kirk MacDonald, and Lorne Lofsky, to name a few. On top of his own projects, he is also a sideman in many other groups including ‘The Cymatics Collective’, ‘QLab’, ‘Diad’, ‘The Aaron Blewett Village Band’, and has worked in several musical theater productions.
His versatility always brings a dynamic flare to his performances, and in a recent recital his adjudicator, Cuban Jazz Pianist Hilario Duran, commented “Oliver Lovekin is in a significant moment in his career. With his compositional skills and outstanding playing, he will soon make a landmark in this country.”
In teaching, Oliver is an energetic teacher who lives by the motto that everyone has potential and can grow musically with dedication and commitment. He says: “I believe regularly listening to music, along with practicing, is one of single best ways to improve as a musician because it fuels your creative imagination! Listen to great music, have a structured practice routine, and watch your dreams come true!”
